£68,139 per annum

Design, Creative and Digital Industries

This post is full time, 35 hours per week. The tenure of the Assistant Head of School role is for an initial period of three years, with scope to extend to up to five years in total. It is underpinned by a permanent academic position.

The School of Media and Communication at Westminster is looking for an Assistant Head of School to lead our thriving Creative Technology and Design team and support the growth in this area of the School. Our BA Graphic Design and our BA Illustration are growing quickly, and our new BA in Games Art comes on stream in 2024. We are expanding teaching in the areas of Interactive design, XR and design and Virtual production.

We are building a new Games Hub learning space at Harrow campus, as well as doubling the capacity of the Emerging Media Space, which includes XR and other new technologies. These spaces are supported by specialist technicians.

The Assistant Head of School is a key post in the School Executive Team, and acts as a subject lead responsible for ensuring that the curriculum, learning spaces and learning technology in the Creative Technology and Design area are up to date and equip our students with the skills they will need in the workplace. The Assistant Head is also responsible within their subject area for the smooth delivery of learning and teaching, and for line management and financial management.

We are looking for someone with HEI and industry experience who can create, anticipate, and analyse the potential of emerging technology trends, and who can influence the agenda through developing new avenues of academic research and innovative practice.  The successful candidate will be asked to work collaboratively with colleagues in our Screen subject area and in the School of Computer Science & Engineering to help achieve this vision. Experience developing BSc and MSc curriculum would be an asset.

The Assistant Head will also have the opportunity to continue some teaching and / or research in their field.  The teaching in the School follows the fusion approach, being research-informed and practice-led. Teaching and research in the School are aligned with our world leading research Institutes CAMRI and CREAM.

Our Creative Technology and Design students learn through studio practice and experiential learning, working collaboratively with students from other year groups and courses.  Scheduled learning includes lectures, briefings, work reviews, demonstrations, workshops, seminars, working on live projects, student awards and competitions and visiting industry professionals. We have industry partnerships in this area with TIGA and Aardman and are looking to increase our industry partnerships and accreditations.
