Research Associate (Active Travel Academy)

This post is full time, 35 hours per week and is fixed term for 18 months.

The University of Westminster is in the process of setting up the Active Travel Academy, an interdisciplinary research, teaching, and outreach centre specialising in the study of walking, cycling, and other active and semi-active travel modes. Closely allied to the School of Architecture and Cities, it works across the University’s 12 Schools, with members from disciplines including media studies, computer sciences, politics and law, and health and bioscience. The Academy is financially supported by the Quintin Hogg Trust and seeks to support core university aims including doubling our research income and creating innovative collaborations that enhance our student experience.

A key part of the Research’s remit will be to develop and pilot new research ideas, and win external funding, which we hope would support the continuation of this post. The post holder’s contribution to this expanding programme of work will include developing and planning research ideas, completing and writing up pilot projects, contributing to bid writing, as well as assisting with administrative and organisational tasks. They will be an excellent researcher with their own methodological specialism/s (quantitative and/or qualitative, from any disciplinary background) and a keen interest (and/or expertise) in active travel. The post holder will support pilot and project work led by others, including postgraduate students working on dissertations, but will also be encouraged to develop their own research project ideas and work collaboratively on these.

The post holder will be expected to actively participate as a member of the Active Travel Academy and show consideration towards colleagues (both within the immediate research team and beyond) and liaise and work with other members of staff (academic, research, and support) and students on areas of shared research interest. They will need to co-ordinate their own work with others to avoid either conflict or duplication of effort and be able to contribute to the decisions affecting the work of the team. The post holder will be expected to deal with routine communication using a range of media and be able to communicate effectively.
