  • About The Post

  • There are two full time and permanent posts available, working 35 hours a week. The FTE of each post is negotiable, and the School may appoint more than two part-time postholders to fill this total.

The University of Westminster is seeking to appoint two Lecturers in Urban Planning to join the School of Architecture + Cities. These appointments will play a key role in the delivery and development of the MA Urban and Regional Planning and BA Urban Planning and Design, including course and module leadership, while strengthening the School's wider planning provision. The posts are available immediately, and the successful candidates will be expected to take up their appointment as soon as possible to contribute to the new academic year. One post will be to take on leadership of the course for the MAURP, working closely with the Assistant Head of School, Subject Lead and course leaders for the sister apprenticeship course and UG planning course. The number of postholders and their individual FTE will be confirmed during the appointment process, taking into account candidate availability and preferred working patterns.

The School of Architecture + Cities is one of the UK's leading built environment schools, bringing together architecture, interiors, planning and related disciplines in a vibrant, practice-informed and research-led environment. Based at the Marylebone Campus in central London, the School benefits from strong links to professional practice, a cross-disciplinary culture and excellent studio and technical facilities. The successful candidates will teach across undergraduate and postgraduate planning courses, supervise dissertation and/or final projects, and contribute to curriculum enhancement and student support, including course and module leadership where required, as well as to the broader scholarly and professional life of the School.

Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent professional or practice-based experience in planning or a closely related field, together with teaching experience in higher education or equivalent relevant professional experience, and a research, knowledge exchange or professional practice profile appropriate to the post. Experience of postgraduate teaching, supervision and applied, practice-oriented pedagogy will be an advantage.

The School is seeking candidates with theory-led, practice-oriented or mixed profiles who can combine a strong conceptual understanding of planning with knowledge of the workings of the UK planning system. A solid grounding in planning theory and history and in UK planning practice and governance, or specialist strength in one of these domains, will be particularly valued. A desire to lead the course is a requirement for one post. Candidates will also be expected to demonstrate expertise across more than two of the following:

    • UK planning law, planning policy, development management, plan-making and planning implementation.
    • Urban design, site appraisal, delivery, viability or negotiation.
    • Housing, regeneration and urban change.
    • Economic development, land and property markets, and local economies.
    • Regional and strategic planning, devolution, city-regional governance, and major infrastructure planning and delivery.
    • Environmental planning, climate mitigation and adaptation, resilience and nature-based solutions.
    • Quantitative and spatial research methods, including statistical analysis, GIS and data-informed evidence for planning practice.
    • Digital innovation in planning and the built environment, including artificial intelligence and digital urbanism.

RTPI membership: our planning courses are RTPI-accredited and chartered representation within the teaching team matters to us. Full or Licentiate membership of the Institute, or clear eligibility for it, will therefore strengthen an application. Candidates who are not yet members would normally be expected to be willing to work towards membership with the School's support.
